PM Modi addresses a public meeting at Agatti Airport Lakshadweep:
“The Government of India is committed to the development of Airport Lakshadweep”
Agatti Airport Lakshadweep: Development projects worth more than ₹1,150 crore.
Airport Lakshadweep: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi spoke to a crowd of people after landing at Agatti Airport in Lakshadweep, highlighting the unrealized potential of the area. He emphasized the insufficient port infrastructure that is essential for the region’s survival in areas like shipping, education, health, and fuel supply, while also acknowledging the historical neglect Lakshadweep has had since gaining its independence.
In response to these issues, the prime minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the overall development of Lakshadweep and emphasized the need to remove roadblocks to advancement. He congratulated Agatti for having completed a number of development projects in the last ten years, highlighting in particular the modernization initiatives that have helped the local fisherman, such as the construction of an ice plant and an airport.
The Prime Minister, pointing out that Lakshadweep has started exporting tuna fish, emphasized the beneficial effects of these measures on the seafood industry. In order to meet energy needs, he talked about ongoing development projects like the opening of an aviation fuel depot and a solar facility. The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the impoverished with basic facilities including homes, bathrooms, power, and cooking gas, as well as the successful saturation of tapped water connections in Agatti Island.
He spoke about the forthcoming event in Kavaratti, which is expected to bring forth more development projects throughout Lakshadweep. During the Prime Minister’s visit, about Rs 1150 crore worth of projects will be inaugurated, dedicated, and have the foundation stone laid.
Prime Minister Modi declared the completion of the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI – SOFC) project as part of transformative measures. The project’s goal was to greatly increase the region’s internet speed. Lakshadweep will now be connected through Submarine Optic Fibre Cable, enabling faster and more dependable internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, educational initiatives, digital banking, the use of digital currency, and digital literacy. This historic achievement was highlighted in the August 2020 Independence Day speech.
The Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant in Kadmat, which generates 1.5 lakh liters of clean drinking water every day, will also be dedicated by the prime minister. In order to solve the long-standing issue of restricted groundwater availability, all homes on Agatti and Minicoy islands will also have their Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) dedicated. It is anticipated that these initiatives will expand the capacity for tourism, creating more job possibilities in the area.
Other initiatives include the opening of a new administrative building and an 80-man barrack in the India Reserve Battalion (IRBn) Complex at Kavaratti, as well as the first-ever battery-backed solar power plant at Kavaratti, which aims to lessen reliance on diesel-based power generation. Additionally, the Prime Minister will lay the groundwork for the development of five model Anganwadi Centers (Nand Ghars) in Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy islands, as well as the refurbishment of the Primary Health Care facility in Kalpeni.
