PM Modi inaugurates, dedicates to nation and lays foundation stone for multiple development projects worth more than Rs 17,500 crores in Jorhat, Assam
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated a number of development projects today in Jorhat, Assam, totaling over Rs 17,500 crores. The projects span a number of industries, including housing, rail, oil and gas, and health.
Speaking to the gathered assembly, the prime minister thanked everyone for their tremendous attendance and acknowledged that two lakh people had virtually attended from 200 different sites throughout the state. His biggest asset, he said, was the continuous support of the people of Kolaghat, who had lit thousands of diyas as a symbol of communal spirit. Reiterating his determination to support Assam’s development, he emphasized the importance of the initiatives being launched today, which are intended to promote growth in vital sectors including housing, health, and petroleum.
The Prime Minister praised Kaziranga National Park’s reputation as a unique national park and tiger reserve, emphasizing its rich biodiversity and ecosystem as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He was reflecting on his recent visit to the area. He emphasized the government’s efforts to prevent poaching and protect animals, pointing out the one-horned rhinoceros population’s amazing recovery. He wished the people of Kaziranga a happy golden jubilee year and urged them to discover the beauty of the park.
The Prime Minister also commemorated the unveiling of the esteemed statue of Veer Lachit Borphukan, symbolizing Assam’s courage and resilience. He recounted the grand celebration of Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary in 2002, honoring the valiant warrior’s legacy.
“Vikas bhi aur Virasat Bhi” (Development and Heritage) has been the guiding mantra of our government, the Prime Minister affirmed, noting Assam’s remarkable progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and energy. He highlighted key healthcare projects such as AIIMS and various medical colleges, positioning Assam as a healthcare hub for the northeastern region.
PM Urja Ganga Yojna-
The importance of the Barauni-Guwahati Pipeline dedication under the PM Urja Ganga Yojna, which links the Northeastern grid with the national grid, was also discussed by the prime minister. The construction of this pipeline will assist people in thirty districts of Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam by facilitating the provision of gas to around 600 CNG stations and 30 lakh residences.
During the opening of the Digboi and Guwahati refineries, the Prime Minister recognized that Assam had previously been ignored when it came to requests for refinery capacity development. He underlined that the government’s dedication has led to the tripling of Numaligarh Refinery’s capacity and the doubling of Assam’s, adding that strong developmental objectives accelerate regional advancement.
Congratulating 5.5 lakh families on receiving their permanent homes, equipped with essential amenities, the Prime Minister noted the empowerment aspect, with a majority being in women’s names. Highlighting efforts to ease women’s lives, he cited the recent reduction of gas cylinder prices on Women’s Day and the benefits of schemes like Ayushman Cards. Furthermore, over 50 lakh households have received piped water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Addressing Assam’s transformative changes since 2014, the Prime Minister mentioned granting land rights to over 2.5 lakh landless natives and integrating around 8 lakh tea garden workers into the banking system for direct government benefit transfers, eliminating intermediaries.
Underscoring the importance of Northeast development for a prosperous India, the Prime Minister assured focused attention on long-pending projects, such as various bridges and railway extensions, to unlock the region’s potential. He also highlighted initiatives like the UNNATI Scheme and increased MSP for jute, benefiting local farmers.
Expressing gratitude for the people’s affection, the Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to serving every Indian diligently. He concluded by congratulating citizens on the day’s development projects, resonating with chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Minister Shri Sarbanada Sonowal were among the dignitaries present at the event.
PM -Devine, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), constructed at a Total cost of about Rs.8,450 crore.
Under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) program, the Prime Minister launched a number of significant projects, such as the opening of a hemo-lymphoid center in Guwahati and the start of a medical college and hospital in Sivasagar. He also opened major projects related to the oil and gas industry, like the Digboi Refinery’s capacity increase from 0.65 to 1 MMTPA and the Guwahati Refinery’s expansion from 1.0 to 1.2 MMTPA, which included the installation of a Catalytic Reforming Unit (CRU), as well as the Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s improvements to the Betkutchi Terminal.
The Prime Minister also dedicated important projects to the country, such as the 718-kilometer Barauni-Guwahati Pipeline, which is a part of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project and was finished at a cost of about Rs 3,992 crore, and the new Medical College and Hospital in Tinsukia. In addition, he dedicated around 550,000 houses built at a total cost of about Rs. 8,450 crore as part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G).
Significant railway projects worth over Rs 1300 crore were also inaugurated by the Prime Minister in Assam. These projects include the New Bongaigaon-Sorbhog Section and the Dhupdhara-Chhaygaon section, which are both a part of the New Bongaigaon-Agthori Doubling Project and the New Bongaigaon-Guwahati Via Goalpara Doubling Project.
